Teachers at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Brighton chose to form a union so that they would have more of a say in how their school was run.
Massachusetts charter school teachers and staff are building a network in which we can share ideas, pool professional resources and speak out on important issues affecting our students, our schools and our profession.
In 2008, teachers at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Brighton, MA voted to form the very first union of charter school teachers in Massachusetts. Turnover rates among teachers at the school were more than 50%, while six principals had come and gone in the ten years since the music-themed school was founded. Having a union, say teachers at the school, has enabled them to work together as group to solve problems and better reach their students. Read “We Wanted a Voice.”
This spring, teachers at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School in Orleans, voted to form the second union of charter school teachers in the state. Read their story here.
